Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations explained: how your home EV charging becomes cash

Every "get paid to charge" program in Canada — Telemiq included — runs on the same engine: the federal Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR). Understanding it takes five minutes and explains where the money actually comes from.

The obligation

The CFR requires gasoline and diesel suppliers to steadily lower the carbon intensity of the fuels they sell. Suppliers who cannot cut carbon intensity internally must buy compliance credits from parties who can prove verified emissions reductions — and residential EV charging is one of those parties.

How a home charging session becomes a credit

When you charge an EV at home instead of burning gasoline, that displacement is quantifiable: kWh in, kilometres driven, carbon avoided. A registered charging network operator aggregates verified home-charging data across thousands of drivers, converts it into CFR credits, and sells those credits to fuel suppliers. ECCC — Environment and Climate Change Canada — registers and audits the operators.

That audit is why rewards programs hold points as "pending" until the annual Q1 verification: the credit must be proven before the cash behind it exists.

Why programs differ so much in rate

Every operator monetizes the same underlying credit, but they verify charging differently. Charger-based programs (ChargeLab, SWTCH, Hypercharge, Grizzl-E) meter kWh through approved smart-charger hardware — accurate, but it locks out drivers who do not own that hardware. Telemiq verifies from the vehicle's own telemetry with GPS geofencing on your registered home, so any charger qualifies and no hardware purchase is required.

Verification method also determines who can join: charger-based programs generally require single-family homeowners with specific OCPP hardware; vehicle-based programs work for anyone with a supported car, including condo dwellers on shared building chargers.

What it means for drivers

The CFR credit market is multi-year policy — the revenue stream funding rewards is regulatory, not promotional. Payout mechanics still vary by program (quarterly gift cards vs Interac e-Transfer vs annual cheques), so compare the full picture before joining. The one universal: joining is free everywhere, because the operator earns only when you charge.
