Clean Fuel Regulations

How Telemiq supports Canada's clean energy goals

What is the Clean Fuel Regulations?

Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) is a federal regulation under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act that requires fuel suppliers to progressively reduce the carbon intensity of the fuels they produce and sell in Canada.

Administered by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the CFR creates a market-based incentive system where low-carbon fuel alternatives — including electric vehicle charging — generate tradeable carbon credits.

Key Goal: Reduce Canada's greenhouse gas emissions by 26.6 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year by 2030 through cleaner fuel adoption.

How EV Charging Qualifies

Home charging of electric vehicles generates carbon credits because electricity has a significantly lower carbon intensity than fossil fuels. Under the CFR framework:

  • Every kWh of electricity used for EV charging displaces fossil fuel consumption
  • The carbon intensity difference between gasoline and electricity creates a measurable credit
  • Home charging is particularly valuable because it occurs during off-peak hours when the grid is cleaner
  • These credits can be aggregated and sold in the CFR compliance market

The Credit Pool

Each kilowatt-hour of verified home charging tracked through Telemiq contributes to the carbon credit pool:

Carbon Offset Calculation
CO₂ offset rate0.404 kg/kWh
Based onDisplacement methodology
100 kWh home charge~40.4 kg CO₂ offset
1,000 kWh (typical month)~404 kg CO₂ offset

These credits are professionally aggregated by Telemiq and sold in the CFR compliance market to fuel suppliers who need to meet their regulatory obligations. The revenue from these credits helps fund your reward — a flat 5 points per kWh.

CO₂ Offset Methodology

The 0.404 kg CO₂ per kWh figure used throughout Telemiq is a displacement/marginal emissions factor based on the Canadian national marginal grid — it accounts for the lifecycle CO₂ reduction from replacing gasoline with electricity, not a provincial generation average (which varies by province from ~30 to ~700 g/kWh).

This factor accounts for the full well-to-wheels lifecycle CO₂ reduction achieved by displacing gasoline with electricity:

  • Tailpipe displacement: An average ICE vehicle emits ~251 g CO₂/km (8.6 L/100km × 2.32 kg/L ÷ 0.80 efficiency factor). An EV consumes ~0.20 kWh/km.
  • Grid carbon intensity: Canada's marginal generation (natural gas in most provinces) has a national average intensity of ~190 g/kWh.
  • Transmission & charging losses: ~12% average loss from generation to battery.
  • Well-to-wheels scope: Upstream fuel extraction, refining, and distribution emissions included per ECCC CFR quantification methodology.

Why this matters: The displacement methodology gives a more accurate picture of the real-world CO₂ reduction from EV adoption than the grid average alone, because it accounts for the fact that every kWh used for EV charging displaces gasoline combustion — the net environmental benefit. This is the methodology prescribed by Environment and Climate Change Canada for Clean Fuel Regulations compliance quantification.

What This Means For You

By charging at home and tracking through Telemiq, you're directly participating in Canada's clean energy transition. Here's how it works:

  • You charge at home — plugging in your Tesla as you normally would
  • We verify the session — geofence confirms home location, data is validated
  • Carbon credits are generated — each verified kWh contributes to the credit pool
  • You earn a flat 5 points per kWh — funded partly through the value of these carbon credits
  • Canada gets cleaner — your driving displaces fossil fuel consumption

Win-win: You earn real money for something you're already doing, while reducing Canada's carbon footprint. No behavior change required.

Redemption Cycle: Carbon credits must be verified by the regulatory authority before they can be monetized. Credits earned during a calendar year are submitted for verification at year-end and audited during Q1 (January–March) of the following year. Your points become redeemable only after this Q1 verification is complete.

Data & Compliance

Telemiq ensures data accuracy and integrity for CFR reporting through multiple verification layers:

  • Geofence verification — Haversine formula with 500m radius confirms home charging location
  • Session validation — charging data cross-referenced with Tesla Fleet API telemetry
  • Anomaly detection — sessions exceeding 100 kWh are flagged for manual review
  • Complete audit trail — every session is timestamped and logged for regulatory compliance
  • PIPEDA compliant — all data handling meets Canadian privacy standards

Environmental Impact

Every Telemiq member contributes to a measurable environmental impact. By aggregating home charging data across our community, we create a significant carbon credit portfolio that drives real change.
